World Languages

Middle School students have two options.  Students can take the first year of a high school world language over a two year span (half pace) or take the first year of a high school world language over one year.  Both versions would earn the student one high school credit toward the World Language requirement if the student passes the course.  High School students take a World Language over two terms, preferably over two semesters.

World Language offerings:

French   - can be taken in the middle school option or high school option.  French 1 - AP French

German - can be taken in the middle school option or high school option.  German 1 - German 2

Spanish - can be taken in the middle school option or high school option.  Spanish 1 - AP Spanish

Latin - high school option only.  Latin 1, Latin 2, and Latin 3

American Sign Language - high school option only.  American Sign Language 1 and American Sign Language 2

Japanese - high school option only.  Japanese 1 and Japanese 2

Chinese - high school option only.  Chinese 1 - AP Chinese

Warning-  Students have to be careful using any format of translators.  The World Language courses require students to answer with their own knowledge.  The use of a translator (vs dictionary) will be considered plagiarism.  The plagiarism policy is enforced.  

World Languages are offered in multiple formats; not all formats are available in every language.  The formats include but are not limited to, Middlebury, Adventa, Apex, and Florida Virtual.  It is recommended that world languages only be taken in the semester (18 weeks) time frame regardless of which school the student is based.  In addition, students do best when they begin a language course in year one.  Students who transfer to online from in-building classes are often off pace.  This is especially true with Middlebury classes.  Middlebury offers three years of a language that covers the normal four years that is run in-building.  It is recommended that a student (parent) talk with an A2Virtual+ staff member regarding world languages to know that the student will be placed properly.

We do not offer World Languages for Middle School students that are less than 18 weeks in length.  These are classes that eventually lead to high school credit and are not considered exploratory.  World Language options begin in grade 6 and are not offered to students in elementary school.
