Statement of Inclusion for Rec & Ed Youth Sports
Rec & Ed is committed to providing safe and inclusive recreational sports opportunities to all young people, regardless of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, national origin, ability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Youth may register using a variety of gender terms, including “non-binary,” and are welcome to select whichever sports and leagues they prefer.

We welcome young people who identify as non-binary or gender-fluid to play on Rec & Ed teams! Parents, feel free to contact Seth Dodson (dodsons@a2schools.org) to ensure we have correct pronouns for your child and to discuss any other ways we can provide children a welcoming environment.

    About the Basketball League Program
Children develop their social, mental and physical strengths and character while learning how to play basketball. Teamwork and active participation are key components. Every child plays as there are no tryouts or cuts.

Basketball is a challenging and exciting game that easily captures kids' attention.  Compared to other sports, basketball offers:
    +Frequent scoring opportunities
    +Fast-pace
+Players on the court are involved and working together with frequent touches on the ball.
    +Tons of movement
    +Indoor for year-round play

Additionally, basketball provides a full-body cardio and strength-building workout to help keep your child growing strong.  It's a mental workout too, with quick decision-making, teamwork and strategy.

Sign up today!  Your child will learn some new skills and have fun with friends.

Winter basketball is open to children in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grades during the 2024-25 school year.

    Registration
Team assignments are completed according to a child’s respective school attendance area and the time their registration is received. No special requests are allowed.

    Team Formation
Team rosters are limited to ten players per team unless a team's coach requests more players for their team.

Players will be notified of their team assignment via phone from the head coach roughly two weeks before the season starts.  Players who have not heard from a coach should contact Rec & Ed office at pickvetw@a2schools.org or joffet@a2schools.org.

Participants are assigned to school teams based on their public school attendance areas.

If two teams are formed for the same grade from the same school, coaches and Rec&Ed staff will assign players to teams in accordance with departmental guidelines to ensure equally-balanced teams.

In the case of limited space, participants may be assigned to teams with participants from different attendance areas.

    Combo Teams
It is not rare for “combo” teams, or teams with participants from two or more different schools to be formed. If your child’s school has filled its primary team roster, a combo team will be formed. Early registrants will be placed on the primary school team.

You may indicate when you register if you want your child to "play up" a grade.

Charter, Parochial, Private, and Out-of-District Public Schools
Charter, parochial, private, and out-of-district public school teams can be formed if all grade requirements are satisfied and registration deadlines met. Registration must be open for all students that attend these schools.  We require a minimum of seven players to be registered for a team to be formed.

    Coaches

Teams are coached and assisted by volunteers, many of whom are parents. Coaches and ten parents are always needed! If you would like to volunteer, please fill out the volunteer question when registering online or in the Adult Volunteer section of the registration form.

    Uniforms

Participants receive a team jersey which must be worn at all games. Shorts, athletic shoes, and socks are standard team uniforms. Indicate your child’s t-shirt size when you register. During games and practices, all jewelry, such as rings, watches, bracelets (including friendship), earrings of any kind (including starters), chains or necklaces are illegal. Any player who fails to remove their jewelry may not participate until it is removed.
