Middle School Math Testing Out
-
On this webpage, you will find information about testing for AAPS middle school-level math courses. If you are looking for information about testing out for high school-level courses, please click here. More information about middle school math can be found at the middle school math curriculum webpage.
It is important to know that testing out is NOT a test of math aptitude or potential. It is a test of current deep math knowledge of the course and content. Testing out indicates mastery and readiness for the next level of instruction. Content for the course tested will NOT be addressed in the subsequent course. Sample questions can be found on the following documents. We encourage exploration of this material prior to deciding about readiness to test out.
Testing out of Math 6, Math 7, or Algebra IAC
These tests will assess if students have mastered the State of Michigan math academic standards for grade 6, grade 7, or a combination of grade 8 and Algebra 1. Students who demonstrate mastery of the concepts will be advanced to the next math course in the sequence.
The 8th-grade Algebra 1AC course contains both the State of Michigan standards for 8th-grade mathematics and for Algebra 1, so both sets of outcomes will be included in that test. Students must have completed Math 7 to register for the Algebra 1AC test.
Candidates for Testing Out
Current 6th and 7th graders who have historically been successful in testing out of a middle school math course have exhibited the following benchmarks:
- Students are prepared to show proficiency on the Math 6 Standards or Math 7 Standards.
- NWEA test scores in the 75th percentile or higher on at least one of the last two tests
- Previous M-Step scores of a 3 (proficient) or 4 (advanced proficient) on the last assessment
- Math report card standards assessed at 3 or 4 for 70% or greater of the total number of standards
Current 8th graders have two pathways:
1. Students who would like to accelerate and enroll in Algebra 1AC (instead of Grade 8 Math)
- Students are enrolled in this course based on prior math performance and teacher/parent recommendations.
- A testing out exam is not required
OR
2. Students can test out of Algebra 1AC. Students who have historically been successful in testing out of Algebra 1AC have exhibited the following benchmarks:
- Students are prepared to show proficiency on the Grade 8 Math/Algebra 1AC Standards
- Previous NWEA test scores at 75th percentile on at least one of the last two tests (at Scarlett)
- M-Step score of a 3 (proficient) or 4 (advanced proficient) on the last assessment
- As & Bs (demonstrated mastery) in Math 7 on report cards for the current school year
Registration
Registration is closed at this time. The next opportunity for students to test out of Math 6, Math 7, and Algebra 1AC will be in April, 2025. Invitations will be sent out to students who meet the criteria for testing.
A video with an overview of acceleration in mathematics course can be found at this link. This applies to students who test out, take A2Virtual courses, or transfer credits/courses in other ways.
